Microchip Launches Single Pair Ethernet Components to Drive IIoT Edge and High Speed Applications

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) technology is laying the foundation for all Ethernet IIoT and Industrial Operating Technology (OT) networks. These networks are built using new synchronous, low-speed Ethernet edge devices and a simplified cabling infrastructure for delay sensitive streaming. Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the launch of new industrial grade SPE products, including 10BASE-T1S MAC-PHY, which makes it easier to connect edge IIoT devices to the cloud, and an industrial version of 100BASE-T1 Time Sensitive Network (TSN) Ethernet PHY transceivers and switches, enabling faster applications in online and offline Ethernet networks.

Matthias Kaestner, Vice President of Microchip, said: Microchip helps promote the adoption of partition architectures in industrial applications through the new MAC-PHY. These MAC-PHYs can be connected to many Microchip microcontrollers (MCUs) to reduce the design complexity and deployment costs of introducing a large number of sensors, actuators, and other products into the new 10BASE-T1S network infrastructure. With the new 10BASE-T1S MAC-PHY and 100BASE-T1 TSN industrial versions, we are making it easier to cloud in the physical world while implementing a seamless Ethernet architecture across IIoT and other industrial networks.
Microchip's new LAN8650 and LAN8651 10BASE-T1S MAC-PHY Ethernet controllers come with a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). When creating sensors, actuators, and other devices for the edges of OT and IT networks, you can use a base microcontroller (MCU) instead of a high-end microcontroller (MCU) with a media access controller (MAC), simplifying the deployment of a partition architecture. These low-speed devices do not require their own communication system, and Microchip's MAC-PHY connects them to a standard Ethernet system, directly connected to the cloud through a simple twisted pair.
For industrial applications that require higher bandwidth, designers can use microcontroller (MCU) with integrated Ethernet MAC. Microchip now offers an industrial grade version of the LAN8770 100BASE-T1 Ethernet PHY transceiver, providing 100 Mbps transmission and reception capabilities through a single UTP cable.
Microchip's industrial grade versions of the LAN937x and LAN938x Gigabit Ethernet TSN switches integrate the 100BASE-T1 physical layer, further enhancing their SPE product portfolio. These scalable, secure, and compact SPE switches support hardware time tagging capabilities for IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP) and IEEE 1588v2 (PTP) time synchronization, as well as other TSN capabilities. Energy efficiency features include ultra deep sleep power off and online wake-up battery applications.
"Microchip's industrial grade 100BASE-T1 product reduces cost, cabling, and installation complexity by enabling a complete SPE network from device to server," said Charles Forni, Vice President of Microchip's USB and Network Business Unit. Our industrial grade SPE products are capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions over a wider temperature range, while providing enhanced performance, such as safety and longer cable lengths, to support industrial applications.
