SSDs and memory are getting cheaper. For these manufacturers, each of them is really losing money. Major memory chip manufacturers have recently released their latest financial reports, showing that the bleak market situation in which memory chip prices have plummeted due to excessive demand, and all companies cannot escape.

Samsung said the decline in performance was mainly due to sharp declines in memory chip prices, which were compounded by weak smartphone sales. Revenue in the memory business fell sharply due to lower prices and ongoing inventory adjustments by customers. Another major Korean memory chip giant, SK Hynix, also experienced a performance slump and recorded a loss. On February 1, SK Hynix released its fourth-quarter earnings report for 2022, achieving revenue of 7.7 trillion won (about $6.301 billion), down 30% month-on-month and 38% year over year; net loss of 3.52 trillion won (about $2.881 billion).
The memory chip businesses of the two Korean manufacturers are both involved in NAND (flash memory) and DRAM (dynamic random storage), and are market leaders in their fields. In the global NAND market, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix ranked first and third, with market shares of 31.4% and 18.5% respectively; in the DRAM field, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix ranked in the top two, with market shares of 40.7% and 28.8% respectively.
Micron, the US memory chip company, is also affected. Micron's first quarter results for the fiscal year 2023 ended December 1 last year showed its revenue fell 47% to $4.085 billion year over year, with a loss of $39 million and a net profit of $2.471 billion for the same period in 2021. Japan's Kaixia, which is involved in NAND flash memory, also cut its wafer investment by 30% in October last year, its biggest production cut in 10 years.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the overall price of DRAM products in the world will decline by about 20% to 25%, and it is expected that Quarter 1 will continue to decline by 13% to 18% in 2023; in terms of NAND flash memory, the price will drop by about 20% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 25%, and the price drop in the first quarter of 2023 will be about 10% to 15%. At present, all manufacturers are facing widespread losses, and when they will be able to make profits seems far away, which means that almost every chip produced is losing money.
