The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced today that global semiconductor industry sales will total a record $573.5 billion in 2022, up 3.2 percent from $555.9 billion in 2021. However, sales slowed in the second half of the year. Fourth quarter sales were $130.2 billion, down 14.7 percent from the fourth quarter of 2021 and down 7.7 percent from the third quarter of 2022. global sales in December 2022 were $43.4 billion, down 4.4 percent compared to the November 2022 total. Monthly sales are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average. SIA accounts for 99 percent of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip companies.
"The global semiconductor market experienced significant ups and downs in 2022, with record sales early in the year followed by a cyclical downturn later in the year," said John Neuffer, SIA president and executive officer. "Despite short-term fluctuations in sales due to market cyclicality and macroeconomic conditions, the long-term outlook for the semiconductor market remains very strong, as chips play an increasing role in making the world smarter, more efficient and more connected."

In terms of region, the Americas market sales growth in 2022 (16.0%). China remains the single market for semiconductors, with sales totaling $180.3 billion in 2022, down 6.3% from 2021. Annual sales 2022 also increased in Europe (12.7%) and Japan (10.0%). Compared to November 2022, sales in December 2022 decreased in all regions: Europe (-0.7%), Japan (-0.8%), Asia Pacific/All Other (-3.5%), China (-5.7%) and the Americas (-6.5%).
Several semiconductor product segments stand out in 2022. Analog, a semiconductor commonly used in automobiles, consumer goods and computers, with an annual growth rate, reaching 7.5% and sales of $ 89 billion in 2022. Logic ($176 billion in sales in 2022) and memory ($130 billion) are the semiconductor categories with sales. Sales of automotive ICs grew 29.2% year-over-year to a record $34.1 billion.
