NVIDIA debuts chip customization unit, $30 billion market to be tapped

NVIDIA is setting up a new business unit to design customized chips for cloud computing companies, tech giants and others, including advanced artificial intelligence (AI) processors, automotive chips, gaming console chips and more, according to sources familiar with the matter overseas. Customized chips can achieve higher energy efficiency, thus saving costs.

NVIDIA currently holds 80% of the world's high-end AI chip market, and its stock market capitalization more than tripled in 2023 and its market value reached $1.73 trillion in 2024 due to the AI boom. Companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta are competing to purchase NVIDIA's high-end AI chips in a quest to remain competitive in the fast-growing AI space. Currently NVIDIA A100, H100, H200 and other state-of-the-art AI GPUs are in short supply.
Sources said that NVIDIA is trying to participate in the process of large technology giants to develop customized chips, after Broadcom, Miman Electronics (Marvell) and other competitors, has helped customers develop custom chips. Informed sources also said that NVIDIA executives have met with representatives of Amazon, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI to discuss custom chip matters. In addition to chips for data centers, NVIDIA is also targeting telecom, automotive and video game customers. Greg Reichow, a partner at venture capital firm Eclipse Ventures, said that if you really want to optimize aspects such as power consumption, or optimize the cost of the application, then it is unlikely to use the H100 or A100 chips.
It is reported that in 2022, NVIDIA has said that it will allow third-party customers to integrate some of NVIDIA's proprietary networking technology into the customer's own chip. After that, a NVIDIA spokesperson declined to comment. The data center chip customization market size will grow to $10 billion in 2024 and double by 2025, according to research firm 650 Group. Charles Shi, an analyst at research firm Needham, said the broader custom chip market will be about $30 billion for all of 2023, or about nearly 5 percent of total global semiconductor market sales.
Currently, the data center custom chip market is dominated by Broadcom and Memon Electronics, and the addition of NVIDIA is expected to eat into the market of these two companies. If NVIDIA carries out such business, it will provide customers with chip IP and technology, while the specific manufacturing of customized chips, packaging and other steps, will be responsible for TSMC and others. The founder of research organization SemiAnalysis said that Broadcom's custom chip business scales up to $10 billion, and the scale of the USMC electronics reaches $2 billion, and NVIDIA's participation is indeed a threat.
In addition to AI chips, sources also revealed that NVIDIA is also in talks with telecom equipment company Ericsson, including cooperation on GPU technology; Ericsson declined to comment. In addition, NVIDIA will also participate in the automotive chip and game console chip customization market, both of which have a market size of about $7 billion. The industry is looking forward to the launch of Nintendo's new Switch gaming handheld in 2024, which is expected to come with a new NVIDIA customized chip.
