ON Semiconductor sells Niigata plant in Japan to JS Foundry K.K

Following the sale of its 200mm wafer fab in Pocatello, Idaho, USA at the end of October, ON Semiconductor has sold another semiconductor facility.
The fab-liter strategy aims to expand the company's gross margins and predictably improve its financial performance by reducing fixed costs. JS Foundry K.K. became a Japanese-owned foundry to supply semiconductors to Japanese customers.
JS Foundry K.K. is planning to use this project as the basis for its new foundry operations in Japan. To ensure continued supply to existing customers, Onsemi has entered into a wafer supply agreement with the new owner.
According to Onsemi's website, the Niigata facility, which consists of two co-located wafer fabrication facilities, is the main semiconductor facility of the Sanyo Electric Group, which ON Semiconductor acquired in 2011, and is primarily used for 5-inch and 6-inch wafer fabrication. The Niigata facility is currently certified for automotive quality and meets the requirements of IATF 16949 (the global industry standard for quality control) for the production of BCD, BiCMOS, CMOS and semiconductor discrete devices.
In fact, back in August 2020, ON Semiconductor announced that it was considering the sale of its Niigata plant in Otani, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The company said that the sale of the Niigata plant was part of its restructuring plan to optimise its manufacturing base and to focus more on highly differentiated power-related electronic components and sensor products.
