Yonhap News Agency reported on December 15 that Samsung Electronics' sales of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) fell 34.2% month-on-month in the third quarter of this year amid the cooling of the memory chip market due to the global economic downturn.

According to Omdia, a market research agency, on the 15th, global DRAM sales fell 29.8% month-on-month in the third quarter of this year to US$17.548 billion. Analysis believes that the global economic recession has led to shrinking demand, superimposed customer adjustment inventory and price declines, and the semiconductor market has entered a cold winter across the board.       Specifically, Samsung Electronics fell 34.2% month-on-month to $7.133 billion, and its market share also fell 2.8 percentage points to 40.6%. The second-ranked SK Hynix had sales of US$5.246 billion, down 25.3% month-on-month. Third-ranked Micron     Technology market share rose 1.2 percentage points to 24.8%, and  sales fell 26.3% to $4.35 billion.
According to data recently released by TrendForce, Taiwan's market research agency, global DRAM sales in the third quarter of this year fell to a new high since the outbreak of the global financial crisis in 2008. Samsung Electronics DRAM sales in the third quarter fell 33.5% month-on-month, and its market share fell 2.8 percentage points to 40.7%.
South Korea's Youjin Investment Securities, based on an analysis of data released by market research agency IDC, said that based on sales, Samsung Electronics' market share of DRAM in the third quarter was 41%, down 2.7 percentage points from the previous quarter (43.7%), hitting a record in 2014. The lowest level in 8 years after the third quarter.
2022 It's certainly not a good year for manufacturers that make DRAM memory chips. Analysts believe that as demand subsides, the DRAM market has begun to really slump. In terms of price, after the decline in PC DRAM in October, the price drop of server DRAM widened in November.
Manufacturers are naturally having a hard time. Although Samsung still maintains its position as the world's No. 1 memory chip, its revenue fell sharply by 34.2%, SK Hynix fell by 25.3%, and Micron fell by 26.3%. Samsung's sharp decline resulted in a loss of 2.8 percentage points in its market share. Shares of SK Hynix and Micron, by contrast, rose slightly. Doh Hyun-woo, a researcher at NH Investment and Securities, believes that DRAM sales in the next year will usher in the first year-over-year decline.
