Samsung Electronics and Naver have teamed up to create specialized semiconductor solutions for large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models, BusinessKorea reports. The companies' first solution will be eight times more energy efficient than NVIDIA's AI GPUs. Samsung Electronics and Naver have joined forces to create a specialized semiconductor solution for large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models. The project combines Samsung's chip production capabilities and advanced memory technology with Naver's expertise in AI.
The companies recently demonstrated their first field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based AI semiconductor solution tailored for inference in Naver's HyperCLOVA X large-scale language model.Naver says this AI solution is eight times more energy-efficient than Nvidia's AI GPUs thanks to the use of LPDDR memory, but did not elaborate on other details about the device. For example, it's unclear when the companies will develop shipping products. Samsung and Naver began working together in late 2022. The focus of the partnership between the two companies is to use Samsung's advanced process technology and leverage high-tech memory solutions such as compute storage, in-memory processing (PIM), near-memory processing (PNM), and compute express link (CXL), as well as Naver's strength in software and AI algorithms.
Samsung already produces and markets various types of memory and storage technologies for AI applications, including SmartSSD, HBM-PIM and memory expanders with CXL interfaces. In fact, memory is critical to Samsung and Naver's upcoming AI solutions. "Through our partnership with Naver, we will develop cutting-edge semiconductor solutions to address memory bottlenecks in large-scale AI systems," said Jinman Han, executive vice president of global sales and marketing for memory at Samsung Electronics.
"With tailored solutions that reflect the most pressing needs of AI service providers and users, we are committed to expanding our market-leading memory product lineup, including compute storage, PIMs, and more, to adequately accommodate the growing scale of data."
