The Battle for 3nm Chips

According to the Korea Economic News this month, Samsung Electronics' Vice President of Foundry Division, Shim Sang-pil, said at a recent business briefing that the company is not behind TSMC in terms of customer relationships for the 3nm process, and a number of companies from China and the United States are working with Samsung to develop 3nm process semiconductors, including Qualcomm (mobile SoC), Nvidia (GPU), Baidu (AI chip), IBM (server CPU) etc.

If nothing else, we will see products using Samsung's 3nm process hitting the market in 2014-2015, including Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This may not be what mobile consumers, especially handheld gamers, want to see, but these manufacturers have their reasons for their decisions.
These companies allegedly chose Samsung 3nm for chip foundry based on a number of factors, including 3nm's technical capabilities, past strategic partnerships, and the need to secure multiple supply chains.
In fact, in the context of Intel 3nm is still far away, the global technology companies in the 3nm advanced process of choice have and only TSMC and Samsung. From the perspective of a diversified foundry strategy, it is not uncommon for chip design vendors to use multiple foundries for some products in order to consider risk diversification.
But Nvidia and Qualcomm's choice is clearly not just a consideration of risk. In addition to the 7nm node in the choice of Samsung for foundry, NVIDIA's GPU has long been TSMC for foundry production, the two cooperation is very stable.
However, the high cost has been enough to change many things. NVIDIA founder Jen-Hsun Huang said after the RTX 4090 release in response to media questions about price increases, Moore's Law is dead, the price of 12-inch silicon wafers is much more expensive than in the past, the cost of advanced processes are also much higher, the company had to increase prices.
