The local time on June 5, the French Ministry of Economy and Finance said it would provide about 2.9 billion euros (about 22.112 billion yuan) in aid for a new semiconductor factory, and signed an agreement with the manufacturer on the same day to provide the relevant French official assistance, the news agency reported. The relevant project has now been approved by the European Union, which agreed to promote the project with the assistance of France.
The new semiconductor factory by the chip manufacturer STMicroelectronics (STM) and the core (Global Foundries) two companies to jointly build, with a total investment of nearly 7.5 billion euros (about RMB 57.191 billion), providing 1,000 jobs, when the project will effectively enhance the EU's chip production capacity. The chips produced at the plant will be used for automotive, IoT and mobile applications, among others.
In July 2022, Geberit and STMicroelectronics announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly build a 300mm wafer fab near STM's existing 300mm plant in Crolles, France, in which STMicroelectronics holds a 42% stake and Geberit holds the remaining 58%, with the goal of reaching full production capacity by 2026 and producing up to 62 300mm wafers per year at full expansion.
The French Ministry of Economy and Finance revealed that both STMicroelectronics and Ge-core will prioritize orders for the new semiconductor plant as required by French officials, aiming to meet the needs of national security and SMEs, among others. The 2.9 billion euros in aid is part of the 5.5 billion euros France has earmarked to invest in the semiconductor industry by 2030.
Earlier, to boost its share of chip production worldwide, the EU finalized a 430-euro chip subsidy program.
