Ams OSRAM introduces a range of sidelooker low-power LEDs for a uniform headlight appearance

Ams OSRAM, a supplier of intelligent sensors and emitters, has announced a range of sidelooker low-power LEDs that not only simplify design for easier installation, but also create a uniform appearance in extended light bars and other automotive rear lighting applications.

Today's automotive Rear Combination Lights (RCLs) require a complex and in-depth optical assembly of diffusers and light guides to disperse the bright spots of traditional top-view LEDs without creating visible dark and bright spots.
By replacing toplooker LEDs with SYNIOS® P1515 sidelookers, automakers can achieve a smooth, uniform appearance across the width of the vehicle. Using the same number of LEDs as in toplooker-based arrangements, RCLs or turn indicators can be produced using thinner and simpler optical components. This opens up new potential for creating striking and unique shapes in new RCL designs.
Alternatively, a uniform appearance can be achieved using an optical stack of the same depth as toplooker LEDs, but using far fewer LEDs and LED drivers. With this option, headlight manufacturers can benefit from reduced material costs and simpler circuit configurations.
"By introducing this sidelooker innovation, Emmaus Osram brings new value to automotive taillight manufacturers in terms of superior optical performance at a lower cost. Emmaus Osram simulations show that SYNIOS® P1515-based designs can reduce the number of required LED units and drivers by up to 66 percent1 compared to equivalent Toplooker-based designs, while maintaining an extremely high level of homogeneity." Michael Lobenhofer, Marketing Manager Automotive Exterior Lighting at Emmaus Osram, said. "The innovative operation of the SYNIOS® P1515 LED also supports the design of new ultra-stylish rear light bars, thus enhancing the product's aesthetic appeal to discerning automotive buyers."
The AEC-Q102-compliant SYNIOS® P1515 LED produces a side-emitting output with uniform 360° light intensity around the device. Light is also emitted from the top of the LED, but at a lower intensity than the sides to ensure that applications such as extended rear light bars without bright or dark spots can be easily realized.
The lateral emission pattern of the SYNIOS® P1515 LEDs is realized by Emmaus Semiconductor OSRAM's proprietary optical packaging technology. Emmaus Semiconductor OSRAM Sidelooker LEDs are already widely used for backlighting high-performance automotive displays.
