Bourns, a leading global manufacturer of electronic components for power, protection and sensing solutions, introduces the advanced, space-saving EdgMOV™ varistor series, which offers breakthrough surge protection performance in a space-saving design. This transformative design allows designers to determine the size and level of surge protection in a given application.
The Bourns® EdgMOV™ varistor series offers a wide range of model options, enabling the selection of a solution with a higher surge rating but lower clamping voltage, or a solution with the same surge rating but a smaller diameter protection. voltage while maintaining the same clamping voltage, thus helping to reduce the risk of failure due to MOV leakage current.
The EdgMOV™ varistor family is available in four model series sizes: 7 mm, 10 mm, 14 mm, and 20 mm, with current ratings of 1.5 kA, 3 kA, 5 kA, and 8 kA, respectively. edgMOV™ chip varistors are designed to match common MOV packages, allowing them to be directly replaced without the need to re-design any PCBs. bourns® Bourns® EdgMOV™ varistors offer surge ratings comparable to the new generation of larger conventional MOV components. For example, the 10 mm Bourns® EdgMOV™ surge protector is rated at 3 kA nominal current (15 operations), which is comparable to today's typical 14 mm standard MOVs, which are also typically rated at 3 kA.
Conversely, if a designer wishes to improve the performance of the primary protector without increasing the size, a similarly sized EdgMOV™ protector can be selected to replace the existing MOV, providing enhanced performance in the same package size. Another benefit is the use of a coating material rated for use up to 105°C, up from the standard 85°C. UL requires components rated above 85°C to undergo 1,000 hours of aging testing, helping to extend the maximum equipment life for the end user.
