VLSI is a company created by SoftBank's hedge fund Fortress in 2016 to hoard patents and seek patent damages against major technology companies. VLSI previously sued Intel for patent infringement in several US states, and last year Intel said it could have to pay up to US$11 billion if it lost its lawsuits against VLSI in all states.

According to related media reports, VLSI and Intel ended their patent dispute in Delaware when the former agreed not to sue Intel's customers and suppliers over the five CPU patents involved in the case, and the latter withdrew its counterclaims, and neither party paid the other to terminate the lawsuit. VLSI had sought US$4 billion in damages in the Delaware patent dispute.
VLSI and Intel have fought several times in the past: in March 2021, a jury in federal court in Waco, Texas, awarded Intel US$2.18 billion in damages to VLSI for two other patents, one relating to frequency management of processors (originally developed by SigmaTel) and the other to methods of reducing the operating voltage of memory In April 2021, a separate jury in the same court ruled that Intel did not infringe two VLSI patents (formerly owned by NXP Semiconductors) relating to computer acceleration methods, thereby avoiding a US$3 billion award; in November this year, Intel lost another lawsuit in Texas and was required to pay VLSI a US$3 billion settlement. In November this year, Intel lost a separate lawsuit in Texas and had to pay US$948.8 million to VLSI.
