Tessenderlo, Belgium - Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, today announced a deepening strategic partnership with MulticoreWare to advance the application of ToF-based technology for automotive safety features. The jointly developed ToF solution is the result of a strong collaboration between Melexis' ToF sensor MLX75027 and MulticoreWare AI algorithms, which enables car manufacturers to implement safety features such as driver authentication, fatigue detection and anti-spoofing detection.

Against the backdrop of progressively increasing demands for safety and comfort and the rapid development of autonomous driving technology, the use of time-of-flight (ToF) technology in automotive safety scenarios is growing by the day. As the advantages of ToF technology become apparent, its application scenarios are further enriched, not only for gesture recognition, driver fatigue detection or anti-spoofing detection inside the vehicle, but also for proximity ADAS external protection and advanced parking assistance outside the vehicle. Compared to 2D and other image sensing technologies, ToF technology is unique in its ability to combine ambient light insensitive high resolution images with distance measurement, providing greater accuracy. In the ToF technology solution, the ToF sensor chip MLX75027 is used as the information acquisition port to provide accurate depth information, effectively improving the accuracy of face recognition.
The MLX75027 is a Melexis volume production automotive grade VGA sensor chip that creates a complete 3D image of the vehicle and enables gesture detection. one of the key features of the MLX75027 is that it supports modulation frequencies of up to 100MHz, enabling manufacturers to fully exploit the performance of VCSELs (the latest laser technology) to achieve higher distance accuracy. With full VGA depth image resolution of up to 135 distance frames per second, the device can detect and track fast moving objects.
MulticoreWare has enhanced its internal data annotation tools during the development of the ToF technology with a deep learning based AI module that uses distance images to mark precise facial keypoints. Based on this information, MulticoreWare created a custom annotated dataset and used it to train a neural network for face recognition and identification. With the data provided by this module, MulticoreWare provides an efficient AI algorithm that takes the driver's facial depth information acquired by the MLX75027, automatically identifies key facial points such as the mouth and eyes, and analyses facial gesture features for driver identification and driving status detection functions.
The ToF technology, which combines the Melexis ToF sensor chip MLX75027 with MulticoreWare AI algorithms, has been proven to perform extremely well in applications such as driver identification, drowsiness detection, driver attention and anti-spoofing detection.
ToF technology is gaining new momentum with the introduction of more active safety standards and the unlocking of more advanced assisted driving features," said Xuan Gao, Regional Sales Director, Asia Pacific, Melexis. It is a pleasure to work with MulticoreWare to jointly extend leading ToF technology into critical automotive applications, helping automotive partners build highly reliable solutions that enable end users to witness truly safe and robust applications."
Vish Rajalingam, Vice President and Co-General Manager of MulticoreWare's Autonomous Vehicles and Automotive business unit, said, "This partnership gives us a taste of the power of Melexis as a time-of-flight sensor specialist, with the MLX75027 enabling us to capture accurate face in any conditions Depth information, combined with our advanced AI algorithms, enables ToF technology to minimize external environmental interference and provide strong support for functional safety in the car."
