Introducing Samsung GDDR7 memory: up to twice the bandwidth and density of GDDR6

Last month Samsung introduced its latest memory solutions and said that 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X and GDDR7 memory chips were on the way. Now, Dr Ian Cutress has presented some of the technical specifications regarding the future of GDDR7 memory. The next generation of GDDR7 memory is said to have twice the bandwidth and density of the current GDDR6.
For starters, GDDR7 memory will use PAM3 signalling at up to 36 Gbps, while legacy GDDR6 uses NRZ (non-return to zero) or PAM2 signalling at 14-24 Gbps data rates. It is worth noting that Intel's previously announced 80G Thunderbolt and USB interfaces will also use PAM3 signaling.
Although there are currently some 18 Gbps, 20 Gbps and 22 Gbps GDDR6 chips available, they did not make it into production during the development phase of the RTX 30 series "Ampere" GPUs, so NVIDIA and Micron have worked together to develop a GDDR6X standard based on PAM4 signaling, with speeds ranging from 18 Gbps to 23 Gbps.
While traditional NRZ signalling provides 1 bit per cycle, PAM4 achieves 2 bits per cycle, and PAM3 uses a more advanced waveform, including more "eyes" (gaps created by wave crossings), to achieve 3 bits per cycle, according to the report.
Samsung says that PAM3 is 25% more efficient than NRZ signalling and that GDDR7 will be 25% more energy efficient. Samsung says that the new generation of GDDR7 memory will deliver 36 Gbps data rates, which is more than double that of GDDR6, but of course GDDR6 has the same improvement over GDDR5.
        A GPU with a 256-bit memory bus will get 1152 GB/s of memory bandwidth with 36 Gbps of GDDR7 memory, compared to 1728 GB/s for a high-end GPU with a 384-bit interface and 576 GB/s for a mainstream 128-bit interface.
