To provide designers with reliable, robust networking solutions with deterministic communications, Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the next generation of LAN969x Ethernet switching silicon. The family features time-sensitive networking (TSN), scalable bandwidth from 46 Gbps to 102 Gbps, and a powerful 1 GHz single-core Arm® Cortex®-A53 CPU.

For applications requiring greater redundancy, the LAN969x family of Ethernet switching silicon can be configured with High Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) and Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP), hardware protocols that provide zero-loss redundancy in Ethernet networks. The LAN969x Ethernet switches support multiple instances of HSR and PRP RedBoxes (RedBoxes) that can operate in parallel and serial, with Ethernet port speeds ranging from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps. The LAN969x also enables the QuadBox feature, which connects two HSR networks to each other. This feature is particularly useful in applications where high reliability and zero downtime are critical. Alternative solutions to the QuadBox feature typically require several different components, adding design complexity and system cost.
Prior to Microchip's introduction of the LAN969x Ethernet switching chip, customers looking to implement TSN and HSR/PRP functionality required multiple ICs," said Charles Forni, vice president of Microchip's USB and Networking Business Unit. The LAN969x is a single-chip solution that reduces component count and system-level cost. These devices also support our VSC6817SDK IStaX Linux® application software package, which helps designers bring products to market quickly." The LAN969x Ethernet switching chip is highly configurable, offering up to 30 ports. The Ethernet ports support a wide range of interfaces including RGMII, SGMII, QSGMII, USGMII and USXGMII.The LAN969x family of switches is particularly well suited for security and safety-critical applications requiring high port count 10M/100M/1G/2.5G/10G switching links.
The LAN969x series switching silicon provides security add-ons such as secure boot and secure firmware enforcement based on the customer's root-of-trust manufacturing process. Security is achieved through ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) based frame processing using a versatile content-aware processor (VCAP), Arm's Trusted Firmware methodology for fast secure boot, cryptographic libraries and hardware security gas pedals for boot and code encryption, and one-time programmable immutable key storage. The new LAN969x midrange Ethernet switch chip family further completes Microchip's TSN switch portfolio. the SparX-5i family supports up to 64 ports and 200 Gbps of switching bandwidth, and the LAN9662 and LAN9668 support 4 to 8 ports and 4 to 11 Gbps of switching bandwidth.
