ROHM Develops Small, Smart Power Devices that Contribute to Safe Operation and Reduced Power Loss

ROHM (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan), a leading global semiconductor manufacturer, has developed the Intelligent Low Side Switch*1 (Intelligent Power Device, hereinafter referred to as "IPD") series of 40V withstand voltage single-channel and dual-channel outputs for automotive electronic systems such as engine control units and transmission control units, and industrial equipment such as PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). IPD) "BV1LExxxEFJ-C / BM2LExxxFJ-C Series", of which eight models have been released.

From a functional safety perspective, IPDs are becoming increasingly popular and their market size is expanding because of their protection function and their excellent performance in terms of lifetime and reliability. In response to the market demand for improved reliability, ROHM began building a dedicated IPD process as early as 2014. By further improving the current-carrying capability of the dedicated process and combining it with ROHM's strengths in analog design technology, we have created a broader product lineup.
IPDs not only perform ON/OFF control of electronic circuits, but also have built-in protection functions to protect circuits from electrical faults (overcurrent in case of abnormalities), contributing to the construction of safe and highly reliable systems. The new product is configured in the lower (ground side) circuit of controlled devices such as motors and lighting, and has the advantage of being easily designed to replace mechanical relays and MOSFETs in terms of circuit structure.
The power MOSFET section inside the IPD generates heat due to counter-electromotive force*3 when it turns off. The new product uses ROHM's own circuit and device technology, "TDACC "*4, which optimally controls the number of channels flowing through the current to suppress heat generation and achieve low on-resistance*5 while maintaining a small package. These characteristics are difficult to combine in a small IPD. This is very helpful for safe operation of various devices and reduction of power loss.
The TDACC technology allows for further package reduction, resulting in an unprecedented 40mΩ (on-resistance) dual-channel output in a SOP-J8 package. Both single-channel and dual-channel products are available in 40, 80, 160, and 250mΩ on-resistance values to meet the diverse needs of customers. In addition, the new products have a higher contact discharge tolerance (indicating resistance to overcurrent surges) than ordinary products, which will contribute to the safe operation of various devices.
The new product will be put into mass production from October 2022 at a total monthly production capacity of 600,000 units (sample price 320 yen per unit, excluding tax). It is now available for online sale and can be purchased from the Ameya360 e-commerce platform.
In the future, ROHM plans to further fine-tune the IPD-specific process using TDACC technology to develop a series of IPD products with lower on-resistance, smaller size, more functions, and more channels, contributing to safety, peace of mind, and energy saving for automotive and industrial equipment applications through a rich product lineup.
