Samsung may Launch High-end Memory Chip Leasing Services

Recently, South Korean media reported that Samsung Electronics plans to consider the launch of a new business model, high-end memory chip rental services, seeking to ensure stable sales and revenue streams when prices turn volatile.

The report noted that sources said that Samsung Electronics recently finalized the "storage as a service" (MaaS) as a new business, and is developing implementation plans. Samsung plans to lend storage semiconductors for high-performance computing to cloud services companies such as Google, and charge a rental fee. Samsung Electronics hopes the new business will account for at least 10 percent of its overall revenue from dynamic random access memory (DRAM) sales.
Specifically, under the new business model, Samsung plans to lend memory semiconductors for high-performance computing (HPC), such as next-generation CXL DRAM packages and data storage devices called SSDs, to cloud services companies, including Google, and collect rental fees from them. By striking deals at predetermined contract prices while receiving system management services throughout the life cycle of such chips, customers will be able to reduce the costs associated with chip procurement.
For Samsung, the MaaS business will ensure a stable sales and revenue stream for Samsung, especially when chip prices fall sharply in the industry's down cycle, the report noted.
As we all know, the global storage industry is currently in the industry down cycle, memory prices continue to fall, according to market research firm TrendForce Tibco previously expected that the fourth quarter NAND Flash and DRAM price declines will expand to 15~20% and 13~18% respectively.
