Intel unveils latest chip technology

Intel on Thursday showed off a silicon wafer studded with chips whose manufacturing process will be available in 2025, a signal aimed at reassuring customers that the company's years of chip-making difficulties are behind it.

CEO Pat Kissinger said of the company's plans to improve its manufacturing process, "We remain on track to meet or be ahead of the schedule we set." He showed off shiny memory chip wafers made using the company's upcoming Intel 18A process, which overhauls the transistors at the heart of the chip's circuitry and the way they are powered.
Intel is trying to dramatically accelerate its manufacturing schedule to meet its 2025 goal of recapturing the chip performance lead it previously lost to TSMC and Samsung. If it succeeds, that would mean faster progress for PC chips after five years of lackluster performance improvements. It could mean Intel becoming more relevant to your digital life by building chips into your cars, phones and gaming PC graphics cards.
Intel Gen 4 in 2022, Intel Gen 3 in 2023, Intel 20A in early 2024 and late Intel 18A in 2024 - although the lag between manufacturing availability and product delivery means that the 18A chips will not arrive until 2025. Display wafers are "evidence" that Intel is on the right track, Gelsinger said.
Kissinger, a chip engineer who returned to Intel a year ago, brings technical credibility to the CEO's job, but the company is having a hard time regaining its footing. Once the chipmaker falls behind the lead, as IBM and GlobalFoundries have done in recent years, it will be difficult to justify the huge investments needed to advance new technologies.
