Recently, as the current automotive grade silicon carbide power device market, the main supplier, STMicroelectronics President and CEO Jean-Marc Chery publicly said, will invest about 4 billion U.S. dollars for the expansion of 300mm wafer fab and increase silicon carbide manufacturing capacity, including the implementation of substrate plans.
It is understood that STMicroelectronics has now reached cooperation with twenty car companies to supply them with silicon carbide MOSFETs, since STMicroelectronics began mass production of silicon carbide products, car gauge silicon carbide device shipments have exceeded 100 million units. Its Q4 2022 results show that operating profit for automotive and power discrete products increased 117.9% to US$470.2 million, with an operating margin of 27.7%.

"In 2023, STMicroelectronics will continue to execute its original strategy with a focus on automotive and industrial, with planned investments of approximately $4 billion, mainly to increase 300mm wafer fabrication and silicon carbide production capacity, including our substrate program. In addition, based on strong customer demand and increased manufacturing capacity, ST's full-year 2023 net revenue is between $16.8 billion and $17.8 billion, up 4% to 10% year-over-year." Jean-Marc Chery noted.
On the technology side, STMicroelectronics and Soitec have agreed on a collaboration on silicon carbide wafer manufacturing technology. ST hopes that this cooperation will enable its future 200mm wafer production to use Soitec's Smart silicon carbide technology. Marco Monti, president of ST's Automotive and Discrete Products Division, noted that the technology partnership aims to continuously improve yields and quality.
In terms of expansion, STMicroelectronics said that the amount of investment in the next five years is about 730 million euros (about $790 million), including through the construction of the substrate project in Italy with an annual production capacity of more than 370,000 wafers, to achieve 40% of the independent supply of silicon carbide substrates and the layout of the entire industrial chain from substrate to wafer manufacturing.
