STMicroelectronics has introduced a global shutter image sensor that enhances intelligent computer vision. The global shutter graphics sensor helps to capture distortion-free images when photographing moving objects or when supplementing light with near-infrared sources.
Alexandre Balmefezol, Executive Vice President, General Manager of the Imaging Products Group at STMicroelectronics, said: "Our new global shutter image sensor has a high resolution and a small size, making it suitable for wearable devices such as smart glasses and AR/VR headsets, as well as being ideal for personal robots, industrial robots and smart home devices. All of these applications will benefit from this sensor's high performance, small size, ultra-low power consumption and optimized cost."
The new sensor has a small footprint of 2.7 mm x 2.2 mm and a native resolution of 800 x 700 pixels. The low power consumption means that smaller capacity batteries can be used, and imaging performance is excellent, with high contrast and image clarity.
The sensor also offers event-like image streaming capabilities, making it ideal for eye tracking and other motion estimation uses.
The new global shutter image sensor also has innovative embedded features, such as native background removal that reduces the host's image post-processing workload. The new sensor also has an "always-on" 1mW autonomous mode that saves power by continuing to sense even when the host computer is turned off. The system automatically wakes up when motion or scene changes are detected.
Prototypes of ST's new image sensor, the VD55G1, are available now and volume production is expected to start in March 2024.
ST partners offer modules for the sensor packaged and embedded in the VD55G1 to meet the needs of a wide range of applications and markets.
