Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE stock code: VSH) announced that its Optoelectronics Products Division introduced a new fully integrated proximity sensor --- VCNL36828P, to improve the efficiency and performance of consumer electronics applications.Vishay Semiconductors VCNL36828P The VCNL36828P utilizes a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) to integrate a photodiode, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a 16-bit ADC, and an intelligent dual I2C slave address in a small 2.0 mm x 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm surface-mount package.
Compared to previous-generation solutions, the recently announced proximity sensor offers a 20 percent reduction in package area, a 20 percent reduction in standby current to just 5 μA, and a 40 percent increase in sunlight offset to 140 klx. With a detection range of 200 mm and a typical voltage rating of 1.8 V, the device provides excellent proximity detection performance while reducing power consumption and improving efficiency in space-constrained, battery-powered applications.
The new proximity sensor can be used to automatically wake up and turn off the screens of smartphones and smartwatches, in addition to detecting whether a user is wearing a True Wireless Stereo (TWS) headset, Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) headset and smart glasses. To reduce the cost of these applications, the VCNL36828P smart dual I2C slave address can connect two proximity sensors without the need for a multiplexer.
The device's programmable interrupt feature allows designers to set upper and lower interrupt thresholds to reduce continuous communication with the microcontroller. The VCNL36828P uses smart offset technology to eliminate crosstalk, and the smart persistence design ensures accurate detection and faster response. The VCSEL wavelength peaks at 940 nm, with no visible "red tails".
