Wolfspeed, Inc. (NYSE: WOLF), a global leader in silicon carbide (SiC) technology, announced a partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Wolfspeed will supply Mercedes-Benz with silicon carbide components to power its future electric vehicle platform and bring greater efficiency to its powertrain. The Wolfspeed semiconductor will be used in the next generation powertrain system in some Mercedes-Benz vehicle lines.

Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, Head of Purchasing and Supplier Quality at Mercedes-Benz, said: "Our two companies have a long history of excellent technical cooperation. Now we have chosen Wolfspeed as one of our key partners for future silicon carbide devices, thus securing the preferred long-term supply, technology and quality of this core semiconductor component for our electrification transformation."
As a leader in luxury automobiles, Mercedes-Benz fully understands the need for superior performance. By using Wolfspeed's expertise and silicon carbide devices to improve vehicle range and power, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the most efficient electric vehicles on the road.
Mercedes-Benz has a very long and successful history of delivering world-class performance and luxury vehicles," said Gregg Lowe, Wolfspeed CEO. We are pleased to support Mercedes-Benz as it introduces a new generation of electric vehicles with efficient powertrains. At the same time, we will continue to invest in manufacturing capacity to meet the rapidly growing market demand for silicon carbide devices. Silicon carbide devices will not only enhance electric vehicle performance and lead to better consumer adoption, but will also support the continued growth of global automotive leaders, including Mercedes-Benz."
The silicon carbide devices supplied to Mercedes-Benz will be manufactured at Wolfspeed's new 200mm facilities in Durham, N.C. and Mohawk Valley, N.Y., USA. The Mohawk Valley facility is currently the largest silicon carbide manufacturing facility in the world, significantly increasing Wolfspeed's capacity. Last September, Wolfspeed also announced that it would begin construction of a new silicon carbide material plant in North Carolina, which will expand silicon carbide capacity by more than 10 times.
