IBM Recently Entered into a Partnership with Japanese Chipmaker Rapidus to Develop a 2nm Process Technology

        According to reports, IBM recently reached cooperation with Japanese chip maker Rapidus to develop process technology based on IBM 2nm, mass production in Japanese fabs in 2027. Rapidus was established in August this year by Toyota, Sony, SoftBank, Armor Man, Nippon Denso, NEC, Japan Telecom contributed 1 billion yen each, Mi tsubishi UFJ Bank contributed 300 million yen, the goal in 2025-2030 years to achieve 2nm and below process chip development and mass production, and has its own manufacturing line. In November this year, the Japanese government announced that it would provide 70 billion yen to Rapidus.
        Japan has the advantage in semiconductor materials and equipment, and many Japanese companies also have rich experience in manufacturing semiconductor products, but there is a lack of advanced processes. the rise of AI and smart cars, etc., is forcing Japanese manufacturers to look for more advanced processes.
        IBM made a breakthrough in 2nm technology development in 2021. It is predicted that IBM 2nm process may be able to integrate 333 million transistors per square millimeter of chip, but IBM has not been able to achieve mass production of 2nm. IBM's cooperation with Rapidus is apparently hoping to achieve a breakthrough in mass production of 2nm. Prior to IBM, Rapidus Japan also entered into a cooperation agreement with IMEC European Microelectronics Center in Belgium, one of the world's leading institutions for advanced process research and development.
        But the development of 2nm processes for mass production is not easy. At present, Samsung, TSMC and Intel have invested a lot of staff and money in the 2nm direction, and plan to achieve mass production in 2025. rapidus, as a new entrant, will face more challenges.
