Infineon launched the industry's first PFC and hybrid flyback two in one IC, which can improve the performance of GaN USB-C charger

        On December 1, it was reported that USB powered (USB-PD) has become the mainstream standard for fast charging and the use of unified Type-C connectors for various mobile devices and battery powered devices. In the latest USB-PD 3.1 standard, the extended power range (EPR) specification can support wide output voltage range and high power transmission. Unification, high power capacity, low system cost and small size have become the main driving force to promote the development of the adapter and charger market.
 
 
        According to the official news of Infineon Technology, in order to accelerate this trend, Infineon Technology launched a new XDP digital power supply XDPS2221. This highly integrated 2-in-1 controller for USB-PD supports high power wide input and output voltage applications, with output voltages supporting up to 28V.
        It is reported that the device integrates an AC-DC power factor correction (PFC) controller and a DC-DC hybrid flyback controller (HFB) (also known as asymmetric half bridge (AHB) flyback controller) in a single package. Through the cooperative operation of these two levels, regulatory requirements can be easily met.
        In addition, the BOM cost and the number of external components are reduced due to the further integration of all grid drivers, 600V high-voltage starting units for VCC power supply, and certified active X capacitor discharge circuits. Integrated gallium nitride devices, this new zero voltage switching (ZVS) HFB topology based product can provide efficiency that is superior to similar products under various input and load conditions.
        With these characteristics and inherent topology advantages, such as zero voltage switching, resonant energy transmission for reducing transformer size, etc., the system designed with XDPS2221 can achieve extremely high power density.
        It is understood that this new two in one IC can synchronize the intermittent operation of PFC and HFB, thus achieving the minimum standby power consumption performance. This enhanced quasi resonant multi-mode PFC integrates automatic enable/disable function and adaptive PFC to maximize average efficiency and light load efficiency. In addition, the built-in PFC function can be optionally disabled, which can be used with any other type of external PFC controller.
        The hybrid flyback stage achieves robust voltage regulation and fast dynamic load response through peak current control operation. In order to ensure ZVS operation under all conditions, the hybrid flyback stage adds ZVS pulse insertion function, and also includes the function of preventing body diode crossover conduction under discontinuous conduction mode. The digital XDPS2221 can also provide easily configurable parameters through the graphical user interface to optimize system performance.
